Mutter Museum | LIVE Review by Goober Monkey

Whew!  What a day!  Kelly and I have been going since 9 a.m. and right about 1:30 p.m. we met up with Jenni and Steph.  We headed over to Mutter Museum after we got our bags up into our suite (we’re in the continental suite on the top floor of the Cornerstone Bed and Breakfast – so incredibly gorgeous!).

Unfortunately, Mutter Museum’s staff was less than friendly with us.  The young woman behind the front counter was not familiar with our Visit Philly VIP passes which gave us free admission to the museum, and was not wanting to give us access no matter what the pass said.  She was rather snippy with us, and eventually called a manager and made it sound like we were a gigantic inconvenience that we were there.

She eventually heaved a huge annoyed sigh saying that their marketing department never told her what to expect with these passes.  Big thumbs down to the front desk clerk.  Honestly, had one of us gotten her name, I would have truly written in and complained because she was extremely rude.

No one is allowed to take photos of the museum, so unfortunately we do not have any to share with you.
Mutter was definitely interesting to walk around.  It’s not a museum for the faint of heart or weak of stomach.

Jars of abnormalities cover the shelves.  Odd photos of bizarre tumors and growths were everywhere.   One big thing that interested me were the drawers upon drawers filled with strange things that people have swallowed – buttons, pins, gigantic fruit pits, toys, and more.

Unfortunately, the tone of the tour was soured due to the girl at the front desk.  I would possibly return in the future, but I’d rather not have to deal with her again.

Cornerstone Bed and Breakfast | LIVE Review by Goober Monkey

Kelly and I just checked in at Cornerstone Bed and Breakfast.  And…wow.  Words cannot desribe just how incredibly gorgeous this bed and breakfast is.  The decor, the smells, the layout…stunning.  Absolutely stunning.  Cornerstone is an absolutely amazingly restored 1865 mansion in the University City District of Philadelphia.  We were very warmly greeted by Dennis and he graciously let us check in a tad early.

We’re busy snapping pictures and getting ready to head out to the Mutter Museum and to Franklin Fountain; we just finished touring Eastern State Penitentiary and have a TON of photos to show you from there as well.  We did a fantastic ghost tour last night and had a blast!

We’ll leave you with this gorgeous stained glass downstairs in Cornerstone, and a pic of Kelly and I at Eastern State!

A special thank you to Eileen at Eastern State  for tickets, and to Chris at Cornerstone Bed and Breakfast for our stay!

Academy of Natural Science | LIVE Review by Goober Monkey

Good morning everyone!  It’s a chilly day here in beautiful Philly, but that’s not stopping the BLOG With Love tour! :)

I arrived in Allentown right about 5 p.m. last night and drove into Philly.  I’ll be honest, it was strange seeing the hilly land and the rocks covered in ice on the side of the road.  Where I’m from, it’s plain flat land with palm trees everywhere!

I am currently sitting in the cafe at The Academy of Natural Sciences.  I have to tell you, this place is HUGE. Floor after floor of amazing exhibits, live animals, parts of history and butterflies.

Founded in 1812, the Academy is America’s oldest natural history museum.  Its pretty impressive here.  I didn’t really realize just how much material was inside of the museum, and it seemed like never ending rooms laying out before me.

I started out in the dinosaur room, and snapped a tons of pics (especially because I know my son loves dinosaurs so much!).  I ended up following behind one of the school tours here today, so I would listen in on the Academy’s speakers to get a little bit of information.  These were two of my favorite dinosaurs:

There is also a pretty interesting area right off of the dinosaur exhibits where they are uncovering fossils!  I watched some workers cleaning off what looked like pieces of bones.  Unfortunately, photos are not allowed to be taken in this area, but you are more than welcome to talk to the workers while they are cleaning!

I walked through a hall covered with these neat leaves in frames.

But then I found the exhibit I was most excited to see!

This exhibit is right up my alley.  It featured so many amazing strange creatures.  Some were extinct, some still around today.   As my son would say, “BIG BIG FISH!”

This bird was taller than I am!

The Bristle Tail dinosaur had a gigantic head.  Wouldn’t want to meet that guy in a dark alley, right?

I headed over to the butterfly room shortly after that.  It was absolutely gorgeous.  I was surprised to learn that butterflies are not as abundant here in Philly as they are in Orlando (which would explain why some of the school kids in the room would scream in terror when a butterfly would fly by them).

I have so many more details and pictures to share, but it’s time for me to wrap it up and head to the train station to meet Kelly!  Follow along with us on Twitter with any of these names or topics:
